That aside, Athens is a great place to visit and you will recieve a very warm welcome in any of the many outdoor cafes. Athens has a good deal to see and because ancient Athens was so small, most of the 'must see' places are all in a fairly compacted area compared to the size of the Athens we see today.
If you haven't been to the island of Crete yourself then chances are good that you'll know somebody who has. The reason for this is that a quarter of all visitors who go to Greece actually head for Crete - it's a very busy place in the holiday months.
One of Europe's oldest civilisations was born in Crete, The Minoan. Iraklio, the capital has some fine museums in which you will be presented with a wealth of information about the history of the island and are well worth a visit.
If you really want to see some fascinating ancient sites then Greece's southern peninsula (Peloponnese) is the location of Epidaurus, Corinth and Mycenae. The ghostly byzantine city of Mystras clings and climbs the slopes of Mt Taygetos. It's snake-like paths wind round and up to stairways which lead you to deserted palaces and fresco adorned churches.
