Car Hire Cyprus - Cyprus in Brief

The culture of Cyprus draws on Europe, the Middle East and 9000 years of constant invasion. Crusader castles rub shoulders with ancient vineyards, monasteries overlook citrus orchards and sandy, sun-drenched feet tread Roman mosaic floors.

Unfortunately Cyprus really is a country divided. Since 1974 visitors have had to choose over the Turkish experience of the north and the Greek of the south. The north of the island is busy re-creating itself in the image of Turkey, changing it's names to Turkish and embracing the life and culture of it's northern neighbour. The Republic is also trying to create it's own identity and many names in the Republic have been re-named as well.

Weather wise the best time to visit Cyprus is April/May and September/October when the weather is most pleasant. The summer months, June - August is usually very hot, and winter can be wet but still pleasant.

Pafos is one of the popular spots for tourists in Cyprus and is very pleasant with good night life consisting of bars, clubs and restaurants. Nearby attractions include the Tomb of Kings which consist of sunken tombs set amid a very arid landscape and we took a taxi to get there from Pafos town centre which took about 20 minutes to get there.

In Pafos itself you can visit the 3rd Century Roman mosaics which are immaculate and well preserved and presented. Most visitors to Cyprus book a package deal and Cyprus is geared up for this kind of traffic rather than just passing tourists, so it is not wise to arrive without ensuring that you have a room for the night first.

The capital, Nicosia (Lefkosia) is in the centre of Cyprus and is split down the middle by the green line and since the fall of the Berlin wall is now the only divided city left in the world. If you decide to visit Nicosia then it would be a good idea to read about the divide first so that you can appreciate the history and the current feelings of the locals.
