Car Hire Cyprus - History of Cyprus
Cyprus has always been an important trading post between the British, African and Middle Eastern empires. Thoughout history people have always been trying to claim the island for themselves. After some to and froing, Rome took over in 58 BC and kept the place in relative peace until the 7th century when the Byzantine and Islamic empires started three centuries of bickering over it.
In 1191, Richard the Lionheart, on his way to the crusades, dropped into Cyprus for a bit of conquering, but after the Cypriots killed his hawk he went on to massacre a few villages in retalliation. He then sold the Cypriots to the Knights Templar who in turn went on the sell the islands the Guy de Lusignan. His heirs did wonders for the economy, but repressed the culture and orthordox religon.
