Car Hire USA - Driving in USA
When driving in the USA the most important thing to know is that each state has it's own set of traffic laws and regulations. Fortunately most of these laws or the same but some states do differ slightly. When you pick up your hire car in the USA it is worth asking the agent for a brief rundown of any special driving rules in that state.
The speed limit in most states in now 65mph (around 110kph) except where signs indicate lower. Speed limits are strictly enforced by radar in many states (especially the highly populated eastern states). Enforcement in western states tends to be much more lax and motorists frequently travel above the speed limit.
The legal minimum age of driving in the USA in 16 in most states, however hiring a car in the USA is not available to people under the age of 21. Drivers under 25 may face an additional charge but can still hire a car in the USA from most rental agencies.
Nearly all state's laws require the driver and front passenger to wear a seat beat. Many states require children to wear a seat belt at all times whilst in a car and nearly every state requires young children to use special child restraint seats. Most states also require motorcyclists to wear helmets.
Outside schools the speed limit is 15mph when the warning lights are flashing. You are required to stop in every direction when you see a school bus with flashing lights. These rules are strictly enforced in every state and have severe penalties for disobedience. Drinking alcohol and driving is also forbidden and strictly enforced in all states.
The USA has an extensive system of interstate highways and state maintained roads. Some major highways are toll roads, known as turnpikes, but the majority are free. All major interstate highways running north to south have odd numbers and are ordered by I-5 on the Pacific coast to I-95 on the Atlantic coast. All interstate highways running east to west are evenly numbered starting from I-8 and I-10 near the Mexican border to I-94 near the Canadian border.
